HOCKEYTOWN USA
WOMENS HOCKEY LEAGUE

2011 FALL NEWSLETTER

Fall is almost here, colder weather returns, leaves turn colors and things start to change. But the one constant that remains is our women’s hockey program. The rapid growth of the program this past season has enabled us, for the very first time to split the league into two divisions. We now offer a C division as well as a D division on Sunday mornings. It’s been so much fun watching this league evolve and change. When we started this league a few years back it was basically pick up hockey. We grabbed shirts off the bench, split up and played. As it tends to go with something like that, you don’t always get the best parity and the turnout is fragile at best. But the baby steps we have taken have now turned this program into the fastest growing women’s hockey league on the North Shore.

We’ve entered several tournaments this past year throughout Massachusetts and New Hampshire, entering both the C and D divisions. And have had the best time at each and every one of them. I will continue to do my best to find and organize as many tournaments as I can. And as we continue to grow I will be able to accommodate more and more players that would like to play in a tournament. Over the past few years I have been able to make contacts throughout the “women’s hockey world” and I am almost ready to start a tournament of our own here at Hockeytown. It’s now just become a matter of available ice time that doesn’t clash with any other tournament. I am hoping to try and get one started in the near future.

But as for this year, we will be offering a Sunday morning league for both the C and D divisions. The games will be played at 10:20am & 11:30am. We will also be having Wednesday Nights at 8:50pm. Our goal is to eventually expand the Wednesday nights into a multiple team league. The Wednesday game will be a mix of players and not broken into just a C or D game. Applications will be taken on a first come first serve basis.

The Saturday morning skills clinic will begin Saturday September 10th 2011 at 10:40am. The clinic will run every Saturday through June 2012. It will focus on improving basic skills such as skating, passing, puck control, shooting as well as an introduction to the team aspect of hockey including breakouts, team forechecking and defensive coverage. Full equipment is required.
